What are your views on Genetic factors and pattern of heart diseases?
  1. Heart diseases like dilated cardiomypathy are seen in some genetic conditions. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is inherited by autosomal dominant transmission.
  2. Rheumatic heart disease may occur in those genetically susceptible to acute rheumatic fever.
  3. High blood pressure and coronary heart disease have a polygenic inheritance and may run in families.
  4. Congenital long QT syndromes cause arrhythmias and are inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern.
  5. Most genetic heart diseases are inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern.
What shift do you see in Prevalence and pattern of heart diseases and what are your precautionary suggestions ?
  1. The prevalence of ischemic  heart disease is rising in developing countries like Latin America, India and Sub-Saharan Africa. This is attributable westernized diets, reduction in physical activity and smoking.
  2. Health education should be carried out in schools, the media and public places on lifestyle modification to avert this crisis.
Any other thing, you would like to share ?
  1. The heart is a very crucial and important vital organ which needs to be guarded jealously.
  2. Primary preventive measures such genetic counselling and health education are ideal and encouraged.
  3. Institutions of secondary and tertiary care should be made available in the community for easy and quick access to health care and should be well equipped depending on the prevalence and pattern of heart diseases in that community.
