    • Enterovirus (EV) caused meningitis.  This is the most common cause of viral meningitis, with 90% of viral meningitis cases being caused by EVs.[2]
    • Mumps meningoencephalitis
    • Mosquito carried viruses of the flavivirus family.  Saint Louis encephalitis(SLE) and West Nile virus (WNV) are the most typical.[2]
    • Specific types of Herpes can result in aseptic meningitis.  These are (HSV)-1, (HSV)-2, varicella-zoster virus, and (HHV6).[2]

Symptoms of aseptic meningitis can include a combination of the following:


Meningitis can only be diagnosed by doing specific lab tests on specimens from a person suspected of having meningitis. If your doctor thinks you might have meningitis, he or she may collect samples for testing by
  • swabbing your nose and/or throat,
  • swabbing your rectum,
  • taking some blood, or
  • drawing fluid from around your spinal cord.
You may also be asked to give a stool (poop) sample.


In most cases, there is no specific treatment for viral meningitis. Most people who get viral meningitis completely recover on their own within 7 to 10 days. However, people with meningitis caused by certain viruses such as herpesvirus and influenza, will usually need and get better from treatment such as an antiviral medicine.

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after changing diapers, using the toilet, or coughing or blowing your nose.
  • Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact such as kissing, hugging, or sharing cups or eating utensils with people who are sick.
  • Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your upper shirt sleeve, not your hands.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as toys and doorknobs, especially if someone is sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick.


The incidence of aseptic meningitis has been reported as 11 per 100,000 person-years, compared with a rate of 8.6 per 100,000 for bacterial meningitis. In the United States, a specific cause is usually identifiable in 10-15% of cases of meningitis.

In India, Ahmedabad, the incidence varied from 12.12% to 56% whereas another study found only 1.5% incidence of meningitis out of all admissions in the hospital. In a study carried out in Maharashtra, India, 36% of the cases were diagnosed as bacterial meningitis.

 It has been found that the majority of meningitis cases over the two years period (n = 1337), were possibly viral meningitis (573 cases; 42.86%).

There are several reports of large outbreaks of aseptic meningitis due to echovirus 30, including one involving 47 cases in Western Australia. An average of 4 cases of viral meningitis are seen per year at Bowral Hospital.
