Although there are several types of bird flu, H5N1 was the first avian influenza virus to infect humans. The first infection occurred in Hong Kong in 1997. The outbreak was linked to handling infected poultry. H5N1 occurs naturally in wild waterfowl, but it can spread easily to domestic poultry.



Avian influenza A virus infections in humans have ranged from mild to severe and included conjunctivitis, influenza-like illness (e.g., fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches) sometimes accompanied by nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and vomiting, severe respiratory illness 

Avian influenza A virus infection in people cannot be diagnosed by clinical signs and symptoms alone; laboratory testing is needed. Avian influenza A virus infection is usually diagnosed by collecting a swab from the upper respiratory tract (nose or throat) of the sick person. Virus isolation is the gold standard test used to diagnose AI virus infections. The virus is isolated in embryos inside chicken eggs. A series of tests follow to specifically identify H and N sub types of the AI virus. These tests cannot determine pathogenicity.


People are advised not to touch any ill-appearing or dead birds. The CDC and the World Health Organization (WHO) currently recommend antiviral drugs oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza) for the treatment and prevention of avian influenza A viruses along with supportive care.  Antiviral Drugs Can Be Used to Treat Illness. CDC currently recommends treatment with a neuraminidase inhibitor for human infection with avian influenza A viruses.



As strains and lineages of the Avian Influenza viruses continue to change, monitoring for the best treatments are ongoing. Symptoms of avian flu include fever, cough, sore throat and sometimes severe respiratory diseases and pneumonia. The mortality rate is nearly 60% for infected humans.

Avian influenza in the South-East Asia Region in 2013. Since the avian influenza A (H5N1) virus had re-emerged in 2003 and 2004, after the first report of infection in humans in 1997 during a poultry outbreak in Hong Kong SAR, China, it has spread from Asia to Europe and Africa.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV) H5N1 was first officially reported in Africa in 2006; thereafter this virus has spread rapidly from Nigeria to 11 other African countries. HPAI H5N1 affects poultry and human populations, with Egypt having highest human cases (346) globally.

An unprecedented increase in the number of human infections with the highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) virus was observed in Egypt during the 2014–15 winter season.In Egypt, highly pathogenic avian influenza subtype H5N1 virus was first reported in poultry in 2006 and was declared to be enzootic in 2008.

There have been seven outbreaks of other highly pathogenic avian influenza strains (which have not caused disease in humans) in commercial bird flocks in Australia, all of which were successfully eradicated. The last reported case was in 2013 in Young, New South Wales.
In Sri lanka by the end of December 467 human cases and 282 deaths have been reported in the world due to birds flu.
