Milder, allergic forms of aspergillosis are more common than the invasive form of the infection. Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) likely affects between 1 and 15% of cystic fibrosis patients. The burden of serious fungal infections in Australia is uncertain. Scedosporium and melanized fungi cause 30% and 15% cases, respectively. Estimated asthma prevalence in adults are 5-8%; assuming 2.5% asthmatics have ABPA, 57,500 ABPA patients are likely and 75,944 with SAFS.

Case fatality rates dropped from 8% to 4% between 1995 and 2008. A recent estimate of mortality in patients with HIV and TB co-infection yielded a rate of 5% for countries in Africa with a low prevalence of HIV infection, but closer to 20% in those with a high prevalence, consistent with our estimates.
