In this condition, the medial layer of the blood vessel wall degenerates, and an abnormal fibrous layer weakens the supporting structure of the blood vessel wall itself.
Mycotic aneurysm 
occurs when bacteria spread into the arterial system, invade the blood vessel wall, and weaken the vessel. Often the bacteria enter areas of previous damage or areas weakened since birth.



Chest pain and back pain are the two most common symptoms of large aneurysms.
  • Almost any unusual sensation or feeling in the upper chest or back, however, may be due to an aneurysm of the aorta.
  • Chest pain is usually the first sign of aortic dissection. Many people describe a tearing or ripping pain in the chest when the aorta enlarges to a critical size and ruptures/dissects. Besides pain, increased sweating, a fast heart rate, rapid breathing, dizziness, and shock may occur.


A full exam, with special attention to the cardiovascular system and abdomen, will give clues to the diagnosis.
  • The doctor may be able to feel a pulsating bulge in the abdomen or hear a loud pulse (termed a bruit) or other signs of aortic enlargement with the stethoscope.
  • The exam findings will guide the rest of the evaluation.


The treatment of your aneurysm depends on how big it is. If it's less than 5 centimeters, or 2 inches, your doctor might try to treat it with medication first. He might prescribe drugs, such as beta blockers and calcium channel blockers to lower your blood pressure and relax your blood vessels. These medications will lessen the chance that your aneurysm will rupture or burst.

Surgery

If your aneurysm continues to grow and if you have symptoms, like chest, back, or jaw pain, your doctor may decide to perform surgery on you to remove the bulge.



Statistics of Aortic Aneurysm


The risk of rupture increases with the increasing diameter of the aneurysm. In those suffering a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm, the mortality is 60–80 percent (30–65 percent if reaching a hospital alive) (1, 2). With an elective operation, the mortalityis 3–7 percent (3–7).

The prevalence of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) reported in Western countries is around 1.3% to 8%. However, there are rare epidemiological reports among Asianpopulation. It is still unclear about the incidence, prevalence, and outcome of AA for all subtypes in general Asian population.

The risk of rupture increases with the increasing diameter of the aneurysm. In those suffering a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm, the mortality is 60–80 percent(30–65 percent if reaching a hospital alive) (1, 2).

It is likely that the prevalence of abdominal aortic aneurysms is falling secondary to cardiovascular risk factor modification and that the reduction in aneurysm mortalityreflects this change. All mortality data was converted into deaths per 100,000 people and adjusted to the 2013 European Standard Population.
