Testing for gonorrhea is done by swabbing the infected site (rectum, throat, cervix) and identifying the bacteria in the laboratory either through culturing of the material from the swab (growing the bacteria) or identification of the genetic material from the bacteria.


The recommended treatment for gonorrhea are antibiotics either ceftriaxone or cefixime administered as an injection. You will also be given an antibiotic called azithromycin that is taken in tablet form at the same time this helps treat any chlamydia infection (it is common for people to get both infections together).


A community based STI/RTI prevalence study conducted during 2002-03 by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has shown that 6% of the adult population in India has one or more STI/RTI. This amounts to occurrence of about 30-35 million episodes of STI/RTI every year in the country. The gonorrhea rate among Asians was 19.3 cases per 100,000 population, which was lower than (0.5 times) the rate among whites. This difference is larger for Asian women than for Asian men. The overall estimated prevalence of chlamydia among young women in South African clinic/community-based populations was 15.1%, but chlamydia prevalence among women infected with another infection ranged from 16.3% (among women with HSV-2) to 38.7% (among women with gonorrheag. Rates of reported gonorrhoea infection vary considerably across Europe, with higherrates in northern Europe. Men who have sex with men (MSM) account for 44% of reported gonorrhoea diagnoses in the EU/EEA, which is only slightly lower than the proportion contributed by male and female heterosexuals together (49%). In 2011, chlamydia was the most frequently reported notifiable condition in Australia, with 79,833 new notifications for persons aged 15 years and over, or 435 cases per 100,000 population. This was nearly seven times the rate of the next most frequently reported notifiable STI, gonorrhoea.The approximately 1.4 million reported cases of chlamydia, a rate of 456.1 cases per 100,000 population, is up 2.8 percent since 2013. Rates of primary and secondary (P&S) syphilis – the most infectious stages of syphilis –and gonorrhea have both increased since 2013, by 15.1 percent and 5.1 percent, respectively.
